Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow has expressed his appreciation for Barisan Nasional (BN) in playing a vital role in strengthening political stability within both the federal and state governments. As a senior leader of the Democratic Action Party (DAP), a key member of the Pakatan Harapan (PH) coalition, Chow highlighted the significance of collaboration between PH and BN in ensuring smooth governance and fostering development.
Speaking at Penang MIC’s Deepavali open house, Chow acknowledged BN’s contributions, particularly their support during the 2023 state election. He specifically commended the MIC and other BN component parties for their valuable backing in advancing his administration’s goals.
“Political stability has been the cornerstone of our ability to govern effectively. It has enabled us to push forward social and economic development, ultimately benefiting the people,” said Chow.
The Chief Minister also stressed the importance of continued cooperation between PH, BN, and other coalition members in fortifying the unity government. He credited Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s leadership for boosting both domestic and international confidence in the administration.
Chow extended his praise to Musa Sheikh Fadzir, the Penang BN and Umno chief, for fostering strong ties between BN and PH. “The outcome of the 2023 state election was a testament to the success of this partnership. It showed how unity and collaboration can lead to tangible achievements,” he remarked.
In the 40-seat Penang state assembly, the PH-BN coalition secured 29 seats, while Perikatan Nasional (PN) managed to win 11. DAP emerged victorious in all 19 seats it contested, PKR secured seven out of 13, and Amanah held onto one of its two seats. BN also gained two of the six seats it contested, with Sungai Acheh assemblyman Rashidi Zinol joining Chow’s state executive council.
Looking ahead, Chow emphasized the need for continued unity between PH and BN as they prepare for the upcoming general election in three years.
Reflecting on the event, Chow expressed his gratitude for attending Penang MIC’s first Deepavali celebration in 15 years. State MIC chief J Dhinagaran and party members surprised Chow with a beautiful flower garland to mark his 65th birthday, which had taken place the day before.
DAP chairman and former Penang chief minister Lim Guan Eng was also present, adding a sense of unity and warmth to the celebration.
